Monitoring a number of sources I have found the following tendency:
Several large corporations such as Boeing and General Electric came to conclusion that advantages of using cheap labor outside the country are offset by increasing cost of freight and materials. Lower production cost leads to other types of expenses, for example, those associated with lower product quality and service availability (I mentioned that a year ago on one of my resources ). W. James McNerney, Boeing CEO, has admitted that the significance of local workers was underestimated. Jeff Immelt, General Electric CEO, supported this opinion as well. He also added that these processes apply not only to heavy duty industry, but to instrumentation and software development too.
This is one of the most powerful statements made during the last 20 years anywhere in the world. I can hardly believe that brains will be demanded again, and quality will be given a chance to get back to its previous level. I hope that other smart governments will follow the example. Then, when travelling on a plane, I’ll be sure that plane’s body was assembled by American workers under strong USA control, and plane’s engine was produced by British workers under strong UK control. Not to mention that those workers’ (highly qualified workers who spent decades to polish necessary skills) salary should be several times higher than non-qualified taxi drivers’.
